How do you become a coach?

Coaching is developing and becoming a coach more and more popular every day. People from all kinds of professions often turn to coaches to solve their personal problems related to their professional activities. And these are people of all ages and income levels. From experience, it has become clear that coaching is a practice necessary for anyone who wants to develop their personality, reach a new level, and reach new heights in their professional life.

If you thought that coaching was just about listening, as you can see, you were wrong. If you decided to become a professional coach, you will have to work hard and even start your own business. Coaching is not as simple a profession as it may seem at first glance, so study all aspects before you start getting into this field. To become a coach, stick to these points. Below you can read about each of them in more detail.

Gain an understanding of who is a life coach and who is not

Clearly, you can't dive headfirst into something you don't fully understand. Therefore, before you plunge into the depths of the life coaching profession yourself, you need to understand what a coach actually does.

A life coach helps the client to develop certain aspects of his life necessary to achieve the desired goals. Together with the client, the coach creates an action plan, which the other person then follows. More often than not, the mentor focuses on the future, unlike psychotherapists who dig into a person's past problems. Mentors often give advice and share their own experiences with students, while coaches, on the contrary, do not give advice. They ask the client leading questions that help him understand what to do and where to go next. Coaches leave all decisions to the client. Coaches differ from consultants in that they encourage them to find and make their own solutions, rather than presenting them with ready-made options for implementation. In addition, in consulting, the consultant remains responsible for the result, while in coaching, the coachee is the student.

Finding your own field for practical skills

You can't just become a coach overnight. Before you do so, you need to choose the area of life that you will specialize in in the future. You can look at our case studies to see what's closest to you. Also, you need to earn a reputation in this field. Your experience defines your skill. When clients look for coaches, they pay attention to his or her personal merits and achievements, so you should acquire one.

There are coaches who specialize not only in the client's professional areas or personal life, but also review people's daily habits. They make edits to a client's nutrition, make exercise plans, or help uncover emotional factors. In practice, you'll encounter more than one of these niches besides your main area of expertise. You can even break down coaching services into three types, career, personal and specific projects.

It's very difficult to talk to someone about a career without touching on other areas of a person's life. It may be that professional problems are related specifically to the home, to the amount of housework, to the relationship with one's wife or children. Any aspect of a person's life can affect their career, so it's important to analyze their life completely.

When you decide on your specialty - when you realize that this is what you are all about, when you realize that this is what you feel comfortable and easy to talk about with your clients - then you will be able to succeed and establish yourself as a professional coach with life experience.

Professional coaching training and certification in this specialty

Do I technically need to qualify as a life coach in order to get started? Technically, you don't need to. A coach is like a psychologist, he can have a certificate, but essentially what matters is his practical experience. There's no point in studying theory for years if you don't have practice.

All certified coaches must follow ethical principles, which gives them extra organization. They are more disciplined because they know they are required to train annually. But that's not to say that you can become a successful coach just by being certified. Many well-known coaches have not been trained at all in the craft. In addition, they receive enormous fees for their work.
