Job Description

As a Resident Advisor & Administrative Assistant (RA/AA), you will take on the dual role of Resident Advisor and Administrative Assistant, serving as both a leader and resource for students. You will oversee daily operations and administrative tasks at the residence hall and studio, while fostering students’ educational, social, and personal development. You’ll play a key role in promoting a strong sense of community among dancers. This live-in position includes on-call responsibilities, with direct reporting to the Residence Life Manager and Operations Manager.

Applicants must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, crisis management abilities, and the capacity to build rapport with students, staff, and faculty. RA/AAs are expected to be approachable, helpful, and courteous in all interactions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • 18 years or older, legally permitted to work in the United States
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and foster a strong community
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Willingness to work extended hours and manage heavy workloads

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or holding a BFA or BA degree
  • Experience in Residence Life, Child Care, Student Leadership, Higher Education, or Student Affairs
  • Administrative or customer service experience
  • First Aid, CPR, or other medical training

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to physically assist injured students, including lifting/supporting up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to help students safely ascend or descend stairs during emergencies
  • Ability to lift and move equipment such as bed frames, mattresses, ballet barres, office supplies, and rolls of Marley between studios

Company Standing
Candidates must maintain good standing with Joffrey Ballet School before and throughout the duration of the internship.


Responsibilities:

In addition to the list below, other duties will be assigned as needed by the Director of Operations and Supervisors. RA/AAs must be adaptable as role responsibilities may change. RA/AAs must review the student and intern materials for all protocols and responsibilities.

  • Assist with building preparation.
  • Ensure that the studio locations are ready for operations. This includes completing assigned projects, creation of materials and setup.
  • Assist with management of property in the buildings as well as in storage, locking/unlocking facilities, turning lights on/off, preparing sound equipment, turning the AC and filters on/off, maintenance and cleaning when necessary, setting up and striking ballet barres and marley.
  • Complete AA office hours at the studio:
    • Open/close the studio. 
    • Manage student/faculty attendance. 
    • Perform daily studio maintenance/cleaning/sanitization, maintain clean and safe studios, locker rooms, bathrooms, and common areas.
    • Run errands and pick up mail.
    • Assist with maintenance of student records, creating name tags, distributing schedules.
    • Assist with virtual and onsite classes.
    • Assist with preparation and operation for program performances.
    • Report and follow up with students who have missing assignments.
    • Assist with work study student management, summer intensive preparation and minor Health & Wellness needs.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out days at the dorms. This includes helping students with their luggage, preparing and cleaning apartments, moving furniture, inspecting apartments, creating door decorations and other building preparations. (Move furniture between buildings, apartments, or rooms, take trips to storage when necessary).
  • Complete RA shifts at the residence hall and studio:
    • Manage duty and admin phone/email in a timely, prompt, and professional manner.
    • Manage curfew, curfew extensions and communicate all infractions.
    • Manage mail and packages at the residence hall.
    • Monitor guests at the studio and residence hall.
    • Take students to doctor appointments and arrange medical appointments.
    • Complete room and floor inspections.
    • Manage maintenance issues and requests and communicate with maintenance staff.
    • Mediate and assist with student conflicts.
    • Conduct Wellbeing Meetings and communicate with any students of concern.
    • Perform rounds.
    • Facilitate student interaction and activities in the dorm. Host one activity per semester. 
    • Assist with daily operations, evaluate areas for improvement.
    • Manage Health & Wellness Log
    • Communicate with parents as necessary and as directed by the supervisor.
    • Assist with the facilitation of fire drills.
    • Conduct studio and dorm tours.
    • Create incident reports and communicate all code of conduct violations or psychological matters.
    • Assist students with problems and communicate sensitive information effectively.
    • Work with the Joffrey staff to ensure the well-being of students and a positive atmosphere at the studio and the residence hall.


RA/AAs will be scheduled for duties at the residence hall and studios. Participation in all training sessions is required, and successful completion of assigned duties, projects, and performance evaluations will determine the fulfillment of the contract period.

The schedule will include:

  1. Eight duty shifts at the residence hall for a four week period as well as five additional duty shifts at the residence hall per semester.
  2. Seven duty shifts at the studios for a four week period as well as five additional duty shifts at the studio per semester.
  3. In addition to duty shifts at the studios and residence hall, RA/AAs will be required to assist with check-in and check out days (Fall & Spring), rehearsals, performances and auditions. RA/AAs are required to assist with load-ins and load-outs at the theater and studios and must work at least seven box office shifts and three full or six half audition days during the year.
  4. Each RA/AA must assist with one Winter Workshop:
    1. NYC J&C Winter Workshop (December 19, 2025 – December 21, 2025)
    2. NYC Musical Theater Winter Workshop (December 27, 2025 – December 29, 2025)
    3. NYC Hip Hop Winter Workshop (December 27, 2025 – December 29, 2025)
    4. NYC Ballet Winter Workshop (January 3, 2026 – January 5, 2026)
  5. If the RA/AA is not able to work their duty shift due to any reason, they must find a replacement for their shift. All requests must be submitted in written form to the supervisor and must be confirmed in writing from the supervisor.

Schedule
The internship does not follow a traditional 9–5, Monday–Friday schedule. Duty shifts will take place any day of the week (Monday–Sunday), based on the studio class schedule and dormitory duties. RA/AAs should be prepared for morning, afternoon, and evening shifts.

On-Call Responsibilities
In addition to scheduled duties, RA/AAs must be available to assist students even outside of regular shifts. In the event of urgent student situations, RA/AAs may be called back from time off to provide immediate support.

Aside from on-call/duty shifts, RA/AAs will be assigned to additional duties. Although some of these projects could be completed while on duty, some of the duties might have to be scheduled outside of those hours. RA/AAs live in the hall with the students. If a student knocks on a staff member’s door (even if they are not on duty), they need to assist them. If one of our students is involved in a special situation, RA/AAs may be called back from time off to assist.

Holidays, Breaks and Vacation Periods
RA/AAs will be allowed to take days off when they are not scheduled to work at the studio, residence hall or at an event. If RA/AAs would like to travel or take consecutive days off, they will have to select their shifts accordingly. 

Additionally, Joffrey Ballet School will remain open during holidays. RA/AAs will take turns working during these periods.

Meetings & Activities
RA/AAs must participate in all mandatory meetings, including housing and program orientations, staff meetings, and one-on-one sessions with supervisors. RA/AAs will also plan one residence life event per semester.



Fixed Rate – $200 per week
RA/AAs will not receive a weekly salary during the Winter Break (December 16, 2025 – January 4, 2026), except for the week that they are assigned to assist with a Winter Workshop.

Housing & utilities
Joffrey Ballet School will provide a bed and single room in housing for the duration of the contract. Interns are required to live in the residence hall and may be requested to move apartments or residence halls during their contract.

Subway fare
Joffrey Ballet School will provide RA/AAs with a metro card, which will be filled once a month. During winter break, the metro card will be filled only for the week that they are assigned to assist with a Winter Workshop.

Complimentary Dance Classes & Studio Rental
RA/AAs are allowed to take dance classes and rent studio space during their contract.
