AT JOFFREY BALLET SCHOOL

Open Classes at the Joffrey Ballet School offers drop-in, in-person classes at our studios in New York City. Students have the opportunity to train in a variety of styles and techniques, open to dancers beginner through professional.

Age & Eligibility

The Joffrey Ballet School Open Class Program is designed for dancers ages 14 and older. Please note that while dancers aged 14 and up are eligible to register, the majority of our Open Class participants are adult and professional-level artists ranging in level and experience. Younger dancers (ages 14–17) are welcome and encouraged to participate with this in mind and should be prepared for a mature classroom setting alongside adult dancers.

Basic Beginner Ballet

The Basic Beginner level is designed for adults with 0-1 years of Ballet training.

Basic Beginner bridges the gap between the “Absolute Beginner” and “Beginner” levels. At the Basic Beginner level, dancers are introduced to the fundamentals of ballet. They will learn the basic body positions, core ballet exercises, proper body alignment, and more!

Beginner Ballet

The beginner level is for adults who have taken at least 1 year of Ballet and have a basic understanding of the terminology and foundations of ballet. Beginner Ballet is the level above the “Basic Beginner” and below the “Beginner Intermediate” levels. At the Beginner level, dancers incorporate ballet foundations into a full ballet class with exercises at the barre, in the center, and across the floor. The core emphasis of this level will be on understanding and improving proper alignment, posture, rotation, and flexibility. Dancers will also expand their ballet vocabulary while learning new movements and positions.

Beginner-Intermediate Ballet

The Beginner-Intermediate level is for dancers with 2-3 years of Ballet training. Beginner-Intermediate is the bridge between Beginner and Intermediate. At this level, dancers expand on the foundations set in Basic and Beginner Ballet classes. The class will continue to fine-tune the basic positions, posture and alignment, while introducing more advanced steps both at the barre and in the center. Exercises will focus on increasing speed and complexity, coordination of arm and leg movements, and developing strength in the lower body.

Intermediate Ballet

The Intermediate level is for dancers with 3-5 years of Ballet training. Intermediate is the perfect level for dancers who are serious about their training and have excelled beyond the Beginner levels. Intermediate classes move quickly, offering complex combinations both at the barre and in the center. Dancers will be exposed to more advanced and diverse exercises, challenging them to elevate their level of training. At this level, dancers should begin to explore and develop their artistry, musicality, and epaulement.

Pointe

This class is designed for those who have taken at least 1 year of Beginner Ballet classes with our Open Class faculty and have been approved for pointe by the class’ instructor. Dancers who dance en-pointe at a different studio are permitted to take Pointe at Joffrey. If a dancer has not been en-pointe within 1 year, they will need to be assessed by the Open Class faculty member before taking a pointe class. Classes will draw upon previously learned ballet technique, with students working at the barre, in center, and across the floor en pointe. All pointe classes are taught at a Beginner level. All adults must attend Beginner Ballet at 6:30 pm prior to taking the pointe class.

Ballet Classical Variation

The variation class is an opportunity to learn classical ballet variations from famous repertoire ballets such as Giselle, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, and many others! This class is designed for dancers with a clear understanding of the foundational elements of ballet and is encouraged for dancers at or beyond the Beginner Intermediate level. Dancers must take Beginner Intermediate Ballet with Stephanie Godino at 2:30 p.m. to participate in the Ballet Classical Variation class. Dancers may take this class en pointe or in flat ballet shoes.

Beginner-Intermediate Jazz

This class explores the technique, artistry and choreographic style of classic jazz dance. Dancers will be guided through a series of technique exercises designed to both warm up the body and build a solid technical jazz foundation. Next a piece of choreography will be taught and explored which will expand on the technique and develop the dancers’ sense of musicality, presence and personal style.

Luigi-Inspired Jazz Technique

The two hour format of this jazz class will allow for an in-depth study of the technique, artistry and choreographic style of classic jazz dance. Dancers will be guided through a comprehensive explanation of a series of technique exercises designed to both warm up the body and build a solid technical jazz foundation. Next, a piece of choreography will be taught and explored. The longer format of this class will allow for a deeply detailed approach to the development the dancers’ sense of musicality, presence and personal style through the choreography.

Arriving at the Studio

Please DO NOT arrive at Joffrey Ballet School more than 15 minutes before the start of your class. Upon arrival, all students will need to check-in at the front desk prior to entering their class's studio. Students arriving 15 minutes late or more will be denied entry to the class and will not be eligible for a refund.

Dress Code

Students may wear any form-fitting apparel they can comfortably move in, such as a leotard and tights or a tank top or t-shirt with exercise pants or leggings. Baggy clothing and excessive jewelry is not allowed. Ballet shoes are mandatory for ballet classes.

Refund Policy & Extensions

ClassPass has different refund, extension, and cancellation policies from Mindbody. All ClassPass users with questions about ClassPass policies should reach out to the ClassPass customer support team.

Students arriving 15 minutes late or more will be denied entry to the class and will not be eligible for a refund.

All tuition fees are 100% non-refundable. All sales are final. Transfer of tuition fee to another class is permissible if notification is provided in writing to openclasses@joffreyballetschool.com. Requests to transfer fee to another class must be communicated two (2) hours prior to the start of class. Notification submitted after this deadline will be considered at the discretion of the Joffrey Ballet School.

A one-time only 30-day extension is available within one year of the purchase date for a fee. All remaining classes in the package must be extended at the same time. Fees are as follows:

Waitlist Policy

Being on the waitlist does not guarantee entry. Admission is based on available space and may only be confirmed by front desk staff. Customers who are not officially checked in may not enter the class.

Students on the waitlist for a class are welcome to wait in-person in the case that a spot becomes available. Waiting in-person is not a guarantee of entry into the class. Final decision of class admission is up to the discretion of the front desk staff.

Students waiting from the waitlist must wait in the 3rd floor lobby. Students are not permitted to wait in the studio
The waitlist will close 2 hours prior to the start of class. If any spots in class open after this time, waitlisted students will be contacted via email or phone call to see if they are still able to join for class.

EFFECTIVE 04.13.26: Unclaimed reserved spots may be released 5 minutes after the start of class, based on staff discretion.

Liability Waiver

In consideration of Joffrey Ballet School's delivery of dance instruction to you and your expectation of receiving such instruction evidenced by your entry upon the property of Joffrey Ballet School and/or off-site location being used by Joffrey Ballet School, and your purchase of dance classes, you agree and acknowledge that:

You are not aware of any medical condition you have or are suffering from that should preclude you from participating in dance activities. You understand there is a definitive risk of injury associated with dancing and that such injuries include, but are not limited to bruises, dislocations, broken bones, torn or damaged muscles and ligaments, paralysis, and even death. You understand that such injuries may be caused in whole or in partly by yourself, or by the actions or inactions of other students or instructors. You also agree to carefully follow the instructors’ directions, to ask for additional directions if I do not understand any particular activity, and to immediately stop any activity that you believe you are not competent or confident enough to perform.

The waiver, release, and other representations and covenants set forth herein are given in consideration for Joffrey permitting you and/or your child or ward to enter onto Joffrey premises, take a class at a Joffrey location or via remote learning, or otherwise participate in any Joffrey event.

Open Class Code of Conduct

Please be prompt and arrive on time for class. Students more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted into class. No refund or credit will be given for late arrivals or no-shows.

Everyone must check in at the front desk upon arrival. Entry beyond the lobby, or use of the facilities, is limited to individuals registered for a class, workshop, or rental.

Students enrolled in a full class, or on the waitlist for a class, are expected to respect and abide by the waitlist policy.

Students are expected to act with respect and politeness toward JBS teachers, staff, and fellow students. Any abusive or threatening behavior may result in removal from class privileges.

Theft, lying, plagiarism, forgery, and all other forms of dishonesty will not be tolerated at any time. No form of harassment (sexual, verbal, or otherwise) or bullying toward any member of the JBS community will be tolerated at any time.

Wear comfortable clothing that stretches, and remove any dangling jewelry. Ballet shoes are required for ballet classes.

No street shoes are to be worn in the studios.

No food, drink (except water), or gum is allowed in any studio.

Disregarding the OC Code of Conduct may result in loss of class privileges.

FAQ & Information

WHAT JOFFREY BALLET SCHOOL IS DOING

All faculty and staff of the Joffrey Ballet School are fully vaccinated.
Staggered arrivals and departure times are built into our schedule.
Commonly-touched surfaces are frequently sanitized throughout the day.
Studios are disinfected between alternating groups, as well as at the end of each day.
Proper ventilation, together with our HEPA Air Filtration system, will be maintained at all times.

Frequently wash your hands.
Maintain a safe distance of at least 6 feet, whenever possible.
Follow our policies to ensure a safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

Attendance/Cancelation for Open Classes

Refund Policy: All tuition fees are 100% non-refundable. All sales are final. Students arriving 15 minutes late or more will be denied entry to the class and will not be eligible for a refund.

Cancelation: Students may cancel without penalty by contacting the Joffrey Ballet School a minimum of two (2) hours prior to the start of class.

Transfer of tuition fee to another class is permissible if notification is provided in writing to openclasses@joffreyballetschool.com. Requests to transfer fees to another class must be communicated two (2) hours prior to the start of class. Notification submitted after this deadline will be considered at the discretion of the Joffrey Ballet School.

Any class canceled by the Joffrey Ballet School will automatically be credited back to a student’s account. Notification will be sent via email.

Late Cancellations/No Shows: If the school is not contacted, or a student does not arrive for class, the student will lose the class and it will not be returned to their account. Students arriving 15 minutes late or more will be denied entry to the class and will not be eligible for a refund.

We are unable to provide a refund or credit for any late-canceled classes. (These are cancellations made by a student within 2 hours of the start of the reserved class.) A fee will not be charged for these late-canceled classes.
