Elsalene Akkerman
RESIDENT ADVISOR/ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Elsa Akkerman (She/Her) grew up in South Florida as a competitive dancer. At sixteen, she moved to New York City to start as a Jazz and Contemporary Trainee at the Joffrey Ballet School. She spent two years in that program then switched to the Ballet Trainee program for her senior year of high school. In the fall of 2020, she moved to Bloomington to attend Indiana University as a direct admit into the Contemporary Dance major. She spent three semesters in the program performing works choreographed by Beatrice Capote, Stafford Berry Jr., as well as performing historic cultural works like “Mourners Bench” by Talley Beatty. In the summer of 2021, Elsa worked as a dance teacher at French Woods Festival for the performing arts where she both taught technique classes as well as choreographed dance shows and musicals. She also helped out in the fitness center, where she found a new passion for exercise. After her three semesters as a dance major, she decided to switch career paths and started to study Exercise Science on a pre-physical therapy track. After graduation, she plans to attend a higher program to earn her doctorate in physical therapy. Before, coming to Joffrey this summer, she will be interning at Health-Fit Chiropractic and Physical Therapy in Boca Raton, Florida.
